Introduction
This bibliography is intended as a guide to the major sources of information on
highways. The focus is primarily on the United States and Canada, with some foreign
publications of international importance included. While the emphasis is on current
materials, several items of historical interest are also included.
Print and electronic resources are listed in separate sequences within each section,
though many of the listed items exist in both modes. The next edition may well see
the rationale for such separation disappear as the migration to cyberspace continues.
This publication itself has only a limited print run, finding its permanent home online
as in the Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies website
( http:// www. its. berkeley. edu/ publications).
This is a collaborative work, compiled by eight current members of the
Transportation Division of the Special Libraries Association. It is intended as an
ongoing project, and several sections build on the work of contributors to earlier
editions. The bibliography is part of a larger Transportation Division project, a
revised edition ( the 6th) of the Division’s multivolume
Sources of Information in
Transportation. The complete new edition will be available on the website of the
National Transportation Library ( http:// ntl. bts. gov/) from Summer 2007.

Document 79): 486 pages. Online document accessed March 2006:
http:// www. trb. org/ publications/ nchrp/ nchrp_ w79. pdf
Presents the results of the monitoring and assessment of ten projects selected
in 1999 by a joint AASHTO, FHWA, and EPA pilot program for
environmental streamlining. Findings showed that most effective streamlining
approaches stressed promoting early consultation between federal, state, and
local government entities, used concurrent, rather than sequential, review of
plans and projects, fostered stakeholder participation and worked to provide
adequate levels of information, funding, and staff for environmental review.

The focus is primarily on the United States and Canada, with some foreign publications of international importance included. While the emphasis is on current materials, several items of historical interest are also included. Print and electronic resources are listed in separate sequences within each section, though many of the listed items exist in both modes. The next edition may well see the rationale for such separation disappear as the migration to cyberspace continues. This publication itself has only a limited print run, finding its permanent home online as in the Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies website ( http:// www. its. berkeley. edu/ publications). This is a collaborative work, compiled by eight current members of the Transportation Division of the Special Libraries Association. It is intended as an ongoing project, and several sections build on the work of contributors to earlier editions. The bibliography is part of a larger Transportation Division project, a revised edition ( the 6th) of the Division’s multivolume Sources of Information in Transportation. The complete new edition will be available on the website of the National Transportation Library ( http:// ntl. bts. gov/) from Summer 2007. 6 I. Monitoring, Analyzing, and Reporting on the Environmental Streamlining Pilot Projects. Washington, D. C.: Transportation Research Board, 2005. ( NCHRP WebOnly Document 79): 486 pages. Online document accessed March 2006: http:// www. trb. org/ publications/ nchrp/ nchrp_ w79. pdf Presents the results of the monitoring and assessment of ten projects selected in 1999 by a joint AASHTO, FHWA, and EPA pilot program for environmental streamlining. Findings showed that most effective streamlining approaches stressed promoting early consultation between federal, state, and local government entities, used concurrent, rather than sequential, review of plans and projects, fostered stakeholder participation and worked to provide adequate levels of information, funding, and staff for environmental review. Noise and Vibration Studies. California. Department of Transportation. Division of Environmental Analysis. Website accessed March 2006: http:// www. dot. ca. gov/ hq/ env/ noise/ index. htm Includes links to major Caltrans noise and vibration studies such as the Traffic Noise Analysis Protocol: For New Highway Construction and Highway Reconstruction Projects, 1998; Technical Noise Supplement: A Technical Supplement to the Traffic Noise Analysis Protocol, 1998; Transportation Related Earthborne Vibrations, 2002; and to other reports and technical advisories covering traffic noise impacts, tire pavement noise, noise prediction models, noise barrier design, noise abatement measures, and vehicle emission noise levels. Also features a link to several on- line noise training modules for use by the public. 56 Road Ecology Center. University of California, Davis. Website accessed March 2006: http:// johnmuir. ucdavis. edu/ road_ ecology The UC Davis Road Ecology Center integrates ecological sciences, engineering, and social sciences to study the interactions between roads and the surrounding natural and human environment, and to develop sustainable transportation solutions that are environmentally and socially friendly. Web site includes links to papers and reports, and features a searchable annotated bibliography. Road Weather Management Program. U. S. Federal Highway Administration. Website accessed March 2006: http:// www. ops. fhwa. dot. gov/ weather Seeks to better understand the impacts of weather on roadways, and promote strategies and tools to mitigate those impacts. Weather events include rain and flooding, snow and ice, low visibility ( fog, dust, smoke, etc.), hurricanes and high winds. Features Best Practices for Road Weather Management, covering case studies of systems and applications employed by traffic managers, emergency managers, and winter maintenance managers to improve roadway operations under inclement winter conditions. Created in 1991, the National Scenic Byways Program helps recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads in the U. S. based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. America’s Byways is the umbrella term used to describe and market these 126 distinct and diverse roads ( 27 All- American Roads and 99 National Scenic Byways) throughout 44 states; their web site features an image library of downloadable photos of America’s Byways, as well as a link to ordering their colorful map.
